Built especially for the Santa Fe for high-speedintermodal service in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they were the onlyversions of the four-axle Dash Eight built with the then-new North AmericanSafety Cab (also known as a wide cab), creating the 8-40BW. Many joined theranks of the BNSF Railway in 1996 and were gradually bumped into localservice in the early 2000s.
